AFTER months of hard work the finishing touches are being put to a day centre which will provide a valuable lifeline for Coventry’s Asian community.
Gosford Asian Day Centre, in Hillfields, has just undergone £250,000 worth of improvement and extension works by city building contractors Pittaway. The improvements were designed by Architect Michael Partridge Project Partnership. |
The Vauxhall Street venue provides care and adult learning opportunities for elderly and unemployed people from the Asian community as well as language classes for those who have just arrived in the area.
The purpose-built centre was constructed 15 years ago but the extensive demand for the services on offer meant the building needed to be extended.
Pittaway's began building work at the site in October and the centre has now been equipped with extra rooms and a lift to provide members with easy access to the higher floor.
Adult education classes are expected to start in September and will cater for over fifty members, five days a week.
Shabbir Usmani, Asian Gosford Day Centre manager, said he was delighted with the improvements.
“I am really happy with the improvements of course they will make a huge difference to our members.
“A lot of our members are elderly or new to the area and the extension will help us to help more people and deliver our services better,” he added.
Ian Goodwin, of Pittaway, said as well as providing work for the company, the contract had meant an improvement to it local neighbourhood.
He said: “I know that the centre has had to work very hard to raise the finance to allow this work to happen and it is great that the new centre will serve a real need in the community.
“The centre is literally down the road from our headquarters – it is probably the nearest job we have ever done – so it is good to see it thriving and doing so much good work.”
